I distinctly remember as if it were yesterday; coming home from school in sweet anticipation to watch Rap City on BET (back when BET wasn’t owned by Viacom……..sigh those were the days).

There is no way to rank these tracks . Each and everyone of them is a diamond in the rough.

The great thing about real hip-hop music is that it stands the test of time.

Here are 10 of my ultimate favorites from that special decade.

Top Ten Tunes from the Movies

SWEETIES

Movies and music are two of my favorite things in the whole world. There is nothing better when a great film is paired with a fantastic soundtrack.

10) ‘ (‘Midnight Cowboy,’ 1969)- Harry Nilsson, ‘Everybody’s Talkin’

Midnight Cowboy is a story about how small town Texan Joe Buck (John Voight) had dreams of making it big in NYC as a male prostitute.   John Voight and Dustin Hoffman show off their stellar acting chops in this flick. If you have an appreciation for vintage movies, this is must see. Everybody’s Talkin’ is a folk-rock ditty written by Fred Neil in 1966. Harry Nillson had major success with this hit. It rose to the top of the billboard charts and won a Grammy.

9) (‘Garden State,’ 2004) – The Shins, ‘New Slang’

Garden State is a cult classic among some people. If you go online there a groups devoted to this movie. It wasn’t that ground-breaking for me but I was impressed that Scrubs actor Zach Braff  wrote, directed and starred in this film.  Most importantly this flick introduced me to The Shins. James Mercer, front man for the band said he that he originally wrote the song because he wanted to get out of his “home town, job, relationship and life”.

‘Pretty Woman,’ 1990- Roxette, ‘It Must have Been Love’

Wasn’t Richard Gere just super yummy in this film? His character had to be one of the inspirations for Mr. Big’s character on Sex and the City. It Must have been Love is like poetry in motion.

In the bedroom and all around

80′s romantic tragedy at it’s best.

7)’Rocky III’ 1982- Survivor, ‘Eye of the Tiger’

Who doesn’t love Rocky Balboa?

Eye of Tiger is one of those jams that you play when you need to amp yourself up for a something HUGE. Sylvester Stallone originally wanted Queen’s Another one Bites the Dust for the movie Rocky III. He couldn’t get permission to use it so he asked the group Survivor to write a song for the movie. The song was listed at #21 on Billboard’s All Time Top 100 and was named the 63rd best hard rock song of all time by VH1.

6) ‘Say Anything’ 1989- Peter Gabriel, ‘In Your Eyes’

Going to the movies when I was growing up was a super treat. In a noble attempt to bond with his daughters, in an act of complete spontaneity, my Dad announced we were going to the movies. When we got there he bought three tickets to see Say Anything.

I remember the distinct feeling of wanting to evaporate into my movie seat. The opening scene was a raging party where kids were drinking , drugging,  and fondling each other. Having to watch that on-screen with my Dad in the next seat was beyond painful. I was grateful it was only the first 5 minutes or so. The rest of the movie was fantastic.

In Your Eyes is still one of my favorite love songs of all time. Peter Gabriel is such an introspective musician.  The duet with Youssou N’Dour towards the ends is the best part of the song.

5) Love Jones (1997)- Dionne Farris ‘Hopeless’

Thank the good Lord for Love Jones. It was the FIRST TIME I had EVER seen a real black love story.  There were no slavish talking stereotypical black characters in this movie. It was just a great love story that happened to be about two gorgeous black people. Nia Long and Lorenz Tate were the perfect actors for the film.  If you watch the video closely in the beginning you’ll see a familiar face sitting on the couch, strumming on the guitar (@ .29 seconds). It’s no one other than American Idol judge, Randy Jackson.  I’m positive that a lot of people still do not know that Randy Jackson is an accomplished musician and producer. He co-produced Hopeless among so many other hits.

4) ‘Do the Right Thing,’ (1989)- Public Enemy, ‘Fight the Power’

“Fight the Power” was an anthem. It made me want to further research the Black Panther movement, get a blow out, and do something uplifting. Spike Lee’s  Do the Right Thing gave me a visual education like no other film. It taught me how to think and create outside of the box. Lee’s cinematic creativity was unlike anything I had ever laid eyes on before. I recently heard a talk given by film director Wes Anderson. He credited Lee’s Do the Right Thing as one of main films that inspired him to make movies.   Fight the Power was rated # 1 on VH1′s list of 100 greatest hip-hop songs of all time.

3) ‘Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome,’ 1985- Tina Turner, ‘We Don’t Need Another Hero’

The sky is blue and Tina Turner is a phenomenal singer. These two aspects are undisputable facts. However,  until the film MAD MAX we never knew that Tina could act too.   In addition to her stellar performance I was in love with her fashion for the film.  Those earrings were the most fabulous accessories my adolescent eyes had ever seen. My favorite part of the song is when Tina sings with conviction “Is it all or nothing”… then enters in the saxophone solo. (scroll too @ 3.58).

2) High Fidelity (2000)- I believe When I Fall in Love- Stevie Wonder

High Fidelity was scored brilliantly.   When  Stevie sings “Come on let’s fall in Love” ( scroll to @4.50 ) it’s like getting hit with cupid’s arrow.

1) (‘Shaft,’ 1971)- Isaac Hayes, ‘Shaft’

The Theme from Shaft is hands down the best song on any movie soundtrack. Issac Hayes made history when Shaft won Best Original Song at the 1972 Academy Awards. Hayes was the first African-American to ever get an Oscar in a non-acting category. The song begins with a sixteenth-note hi-hat ride pattern, played by Willie Hall, which was drawn from a break on Otis Redding‘s “Try A Little Tenderness“, a Stax record on which Hayes had played. On top of everything amazing Hayes had accomplished in his life he was also made a king in Ghana. He was bestowed this honor for his humanitarian work and economic efforts on the country’s behalf.

This week I chose ten songs that were prevalent during the years I was figuring things out and on my way towards adulthood; my coming of age.

If there was a soundtrack of my life there would be thousands of songs. It was a tough task to just pick 10 from the R&B genre.

These songs are special to me because they remind me of  the good ole days of yesteryear.

10)Buffalo Stance- Neneh Cherry

♪No $$ man Can win my Love.. It’s sweetness that I’m thinking of♪

Neneh Cherry was a pioneer for me. Not only was this a hot track,  Cherry was a breath of fresh air. She wasn’t the typical R&B singer or rapper. She had a funky fashion flair and had such power on the mic. You knew she was one of those people you wouldn’t want to mess with! She was singing about what she wanted from a man AND told him  “and don’t you get fresh with me!”

“Buffalo Stance,” Cherry was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1990 in the Best New Artist Category; she lost out to Milli Vanilli, who later had their Grammy revoked when it was discovered that they had not performed on their recording.

9)Monie Love- It’s a Shame

Monie Love was solid on the MIC. Love also has a place in hip-hop history as a member of the Native Tongues, a positive-minded hip-hop collective that included Queen Latifah, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, the Jungle Brothers, and a number of other act. Currently, she has a radio show on XM Satellite Radio called Ladies First Radio with Monie Love. It airs Thursdays 6PM ET and Sundays 8PM ET.

8)Soul for Real- Candy- Candy Rain (1995)

Soul for Real were the cutest bunch of brothers since the Jackson 5. Produced by Heavy D, Candy Rain’s first single was the album’s title track. The song hit #1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, and peaked at #2 on the Hot 100 chart.

7)Sean Paul- Deport Them (1998)

When I first hear this song, I fell in love with it even though I have to admit I had no idea what Sean Paul was chanting.  Crowds would go crazy when it came on a party. People still do. I was club last weekend (begrudgingly.. I HATE clubs with a passion) and the crowd went nuts. “Deport Them” was the first single released by  Sean Paul from his debut album Stage One. Originally released in 1998, it reached number 80 on Billboard’s R&B Chart in 2000. The song was briefly featured in the film 2 Fast 2 Furious.

6)Blackstreet- Don’t Leave Me (1997)

This song is one of the best “baby come back to me, I messed up royally but I looooooove you” songs to hit the airwaves in the 1990′s. I absolutely have a weak spot in my heart for love songs that feature men pouring their hearts out to the women they love. You can feel the pain when Teddy Riley starts to sing “STAAAAAAAAAY…. 4EVER…… STAY…. Don’t LEAVE”.

5)Foxy Brown feat Blackstreet- Gotta get you home

During my first year of college this song hit the radio waves and it was an instance hit. From the moment the beat dropped, the hands went in the air and people got on the good foot.

4)Tony! Toni! Toné! – Feels Good (1990)

“If the rhythms feels good to ya baby let me hear you say”

This song was the JAM. One of the main anthems on the soundtrack of my life.

Tony! Toni! Toné! is the type of group that I gravitated towards because they were REAL musicians with a real groove. This group was truly a Family Affair. During the band’s heyday, it was composed of D’wayne Wiggins on lead vocals and guitar his brother Raphael Saadiq (born Charlie Ray Wiggins) on lead vocals and bass, and their cousin Timothy Christian Riley on drums.

3)Maxwell: Let’s Not Play the Game- (1999)

SEXUAL CHOCOLATE

This video was so much jaw-dropping, drooling eye candy it’s a bit ridiculous.

All of the fine men from the film “The Best Man” were in the video; Taye Digges, Morris Chestnut, Terrance Howard, and Harold Perrineau. This was one of the only videos I remember watching that was not degrading.  We need more videos like this now-a-days. The rapper by the pool with dozens of bikini-clad video hoes is SO PLAYED OUT, don’t you all think?

2)DeBarge- The Rhythm of the Night (1985)

This song has a Lionel Ritchie- ‘All Night Long’ appeal to it. It made me want to get up and ♪ dance to the rhythm and forget about the worries on my mind♪!

I discovered this song by rummaging through my parents old records and tapes and listening to the “oldies” station.

My ultimate favorite part of the song is when they go into the La…La.. La.. La’s (check it out @ 3.13).

I also loved the fact that Debarge is a family act.  It’s just so touching to see a whole family singing together. Debarge is like an 80’s urban Sound of Music come to life.

1) Michael Jackson- Off the Wall- (1979)

I was barely out of the womb when this song came out but I had to include it because I listened to this album a lot growing up.

“♪ So tonight.. you gotta leave that 9-5 up on the shelf… and just enjoy yourself ♪”

I played this album, over and over until the record wore out! Check out this live performance from 1979.

I hope you’ve enjoyed a slice of my musical palate.

The 82nd Academy Awards were blah.. blah… blah and more blah.

Most awards shows are always boring and pretentious but I remember the days of  yesteryear experiencing a jolt of excitement  as I  watched the pomp and circumstance of the red carpet.

This year watching the red carpet was like craving a bowl of cereal then realizing after the first bite it was stale.

My mouth did water a bit over  the  strapless gold/silver floor length number from the genius of Oscar de la Renta adorned by Cameron Diaz.

On the opposite end of the spectrum there were several runners-up for fashion low lights of the evening. I liked everything about the Giorgio Armani Privé dress that good ole Jenny from the Block wore. I would have loved the dress minus that side bussle thing on her hip.

Marc Anthony should have ripped that side bussle right off the dress before letting her step out of the mansion

Sarah Jessica Parker in couture Channel was a huge let down.

The public expects that SJP  should look fabulous at every function because of  her style on  Sex and the City.

Don’t get it twisted; SJP was styled from head to toe by Patricia Field for that show.

Her  stylist now clearly doesn’t possess the Patricia Field magic.

We all knew months ago that Mo’Nique, Bullock, Waltz,  and Bridges would win the shiny statue for their respective categories. It is mildly entertaining that Kathryn Bigelow got to have an “I’m a Queen of the World” moment for her win as Best Director for The Hurt Locker.  It’s a shame that this was the first year a woman has won an Oscar for Best Director.

It’s not all that shocking though.

The Academy Awards are not known for progressive- forward thinking.  Year after year they continue to uphold the “Old Boys Club” mentality of Hollywood.

Same old story. Nothing new.

Hopefully there will be some new blood that will surface within the Academy sooner rather than later so these out-dated and biased ways of thinking can be put to rest.

Call it wishful thinking but a girl has got to have dreams.

Naomi Campbell might be one of the most beautiful faces to ever walk the  catwalk, but she has proven herself CERTIFIABLE!

The New York Times reported today that the NYPD is currently searching for Ms. Campbell to question her  in what appears to be yet again another accusation of assault.

Campbell’s driver is walking around with a  bruiser on his eye and he is pointing the finger at straight at Naomi.

She’s got to have some serious rage boiling inside that body because why on earth would she risk jail time? Even though she clearly is one tough broad I doubt she would stand a chance in  jail. Those women would have her for snack not even a main course. I shudder to think about that.

She has already pleaded guilty in the last three years to two assault charges.

Her driver told police that Campbell hit him as he was driving her today through Mid-town Manhattan. The incident reportedly happened at 58th Street and 2nd Avenue. The driver claims that after Campbell hit him he pulled over and she took off and hasn’t been seen since.

Her spokesperson told the press that “There shouldn’t be a rush to judgment, Naomi will cooperate voluntarily, and there is more to the story than meets the eye.”

Oh really? I for one can’t wait to her Naomi’s version of what on earth could possess her to endanger lives while assaulting someone who is operating a moving vehicle.

She should stop trying to hide because it’s impossible to keep that gig up for too long. She’s one of the most recognizable faces in the world.

The last time Naomi’s rage went rampant was in 2006 when she plead guilty in New York to reckless assault for hitting her maid in the head with a cellphone. She was sentenced to five days of community service and anger management classes.

This time around I have a sinking feeling she’s going to get more than a slap on the wrist.

One of the best MC’s is in coma this evening.

GURU is 1/2 of the legendary Brooklyn hip-hop duo Gang Starr.

DJ Premier (the other half of Gang Starr) went on the  Sirius Satellite radio show Hip Hop Nation to confirm that Guru had a heart-attack this weekend and has been hospitalized. He will undergo surgery on Monday afternoon.

Gang Starr broke unto the scene with ‘No More Mr. Nice Guy’ in 1989. The duo was responsible for countless hits and have been credited as an enormous influence within hip-hop culture and music.

All four volumes of Guru’s Jazzmatazz are among my ultimate favorite hip-hop albums of all time.
