Evening Sweeties

I’m Not HATIN’….. I’m Just SAYIN’

I am not going to get on my soapbox and give a scathing critical analysis of  urban culture because quite frankly Nightly Candy is not the venue and besides tonight is reggae night at my favorite spot and I’ve got to get my outfit together.

Jamie Foxx isn’t the first musician (I shouldn’t refer to him as that) to sing about drinking and exploiting women unfortunately this has been an acceptable norm in pop culture.  The T- bone I have to pick is with the video for Blame It (on the Alcohol). Have you all seen it? It just doesn’t make any sense to me whatsoever. The video is as disjointed as the song.

It has the makings of an SNL Digital Short.

Jake Gyllenhaal, Ron Howard, Quincy Jones, Forrest Whittaker, Samuel L. Jackson getting drunk together at some VIP club in the Hollywood Hills was a recipe for things that make you go…. hmmm?

(remember C & C Music Factory Y’all? For those who don’t here is a quick digression for ya)

Poor Ron Howard. I am sure somehow he was contractually obligated to appear in the video for 30 seconds and he just didn’t look happy to be there.  Samuel L. Jackson sitting in between too big breasted blinged out babes, the random girl with down syndrome dancing, Jack Gyllenhaal looking like he is thinking to himself “when is this shoot over?? I need to go bike riding with Reese”, Tatiana Ali??

Huuuuuuuuuuuh???

I just didn’t get it.

I guess we do really have to blame it on the alcohol because  falling down on your face drunk is the only reason I can deduce that this spectacle of a song and video was created.

Actually it’s more likely that Greygoose, Pitron and all the other alcoholic brands that were shamelessly dropped in this song were the benefactors of this tune.

I will never understand how alcohol abuse is such a leading cause of death but yet it is so widely endorsed to make it look like the coolest thing in the world. It certainly is the truth that money makes the world go around.

Night Night

Nightly, I was thinking the same thing when I saw this video. Where do I begin? I’ll start with these great actors like Samuel Jackson, Ron Howard and Forest Whitaker in this video, for what. To make it seem that they party with Jamie Foxx like this. Also, what was this video about, I still don’t know. Nightly, I’m so glad you brought up this terrible video, even though the song is jam.

Hey Lashae!

As always I look forward to your comments! They always are on point and make me LAUGH out LOUD.
It’s a catch 22 with Blame It (on the Alcohol) because as you wrote
“the song is JAM”!
As much as I hate admit it the beat is great for getting on the good foot.
It totally deserved a waaay better video than that.
What happened to Hype Williams? He used to be so talented with the music videos? Perhaps he was forced to do it that way. I have to rationalize it somehow.

I was JUST watching this video last night and was thinking the same thing.
WTF?
I do like this song but it kinda changed for me after watching the video.
It is so bizarre.
Jamie Foxx always did strike me as weirdo though.

These days I don’t even listen to lyrics anymore I just blank them out because they don’t make sense. I looked up the lyrics to this song and they totally don’t make sense.

I was LMAO when I saw Jake Gyhellenhaal (however you spell that name) was the first credit on this video.
HILARIOUS
It’s a good song to dance to at the club but I don’t need to drink to have a good time and dance.

“Jack Gyllenhaal looking like he is thinking to himself “when is this shoot over?? I need to go bike riding with Reese”, Tatiana Ali??”

LOL

Jake Gyllenhaal was probably checking out cute guys around him – I’m sure he wasn’t thinking about his fugly beard.

The video was never meant to be deconstructed. The song imo is great and the music video is one of the first to use celebrities to prmote it. If nothing else, you can’t ignore the success of both the song and the music video. Both have been hitting the top of charts countrywide and are on the air (here in NYC at least) every 15 minutes.

Hey,
Thanks for stopping by and leaving your comment!
I do agree that this video wasn’t meant to be deconstructed. Not most videos these days have any sort of substantive qualities worth of critical analysis.
However call me a square if you want to, I still believe if I’m watching a visual interpretation it should have a point, or tell a story.
That is just my opinion though.
A couple years ago I vowed to stop listening to Hot 97 and the other major NYC stations. It’s way too saturated for my taste but I recognize it is what the people want.
I was in Harlem the other day and saw these little girls bumping, grinding, and gyrating about to this song outside. I thought to myself

“that’s just what the world need more of”
